Afropunkfest 2012: Music? I'm Here For Food

 

Afropunk Festival is a FREE annual music festival in Brooklyn. People journey here in hordes and music can be heard from blocks away (especially since they have two stages). The line up was good this year, and consequently the line to get in wrapped around the perimeter of the park. I believe the park's capacity is 30,000 people and once that threshold is reached, security will not allow anyone else inside.

I thought to myself, why go inside when the best part is outside the park. New York's top 15 food trucks lined up the street right outside the entrance.

 

We were only able to sample two trucks (not that I could eat more than two). Also most of the trucks closed at 8pm sharp. The full list of trucks is as follows:

Not really knowing what to try first we decided to go for the truck with the longest line. We ended up at Korilla BBQ.

We ended up getting six tacos, three bulgogi (ribeye), and three spicy pork. Each taco had a different assortment of toppings: pickled daikon, slaw, and kimchi. Every taco was also topped with their signature Korilla sauce (a smokey spicy mayo). They even threw in a pickled cucumber that had very mild kimchi flavor.

The bulgogi had a sweet flavor, while the spicy pork is exactly as one would expect. I thought they were all very tasty. I was concerned about the kimchi topping, but it was very mild in flavor/potency and did not cover the flavor of the meat. The sauce was also very tasty. After sampling each taco, I would say my favorite was the spicy pork with daikon. If I had the chance, I would definitely eat from this truck again, but next time I'd ask for a fork. These, like most tacos, tend to be a handful *smirk*

The next truck we hit up was the Jamaican Dutchy right on the edge of the street. The portions were huge, so me and my roomie decided to split an order of jerk chicken.

There were about four large pieces of chicken, and under the mountain of salad was rice with beans. The chicken was very tender and had a kick to it. The majority of the seasoning was in the form of a rub on the underside of the chicken and the skin. At times I found myself biting into these pockets of unexpected flavor. Other times I found the chicken skin sliding off the meat resulting in a very flavorful piece of fat, and a not so flavorful piece of meat. The salad and rice were pretty bland, but were the perfect side dish to the chicken.

As we were leaving, we noticed a few people sneaking into the park through the back. Apparently someone had conveniently left a ladder next to the inner fence, and someone had made a hole in the outer fence. Without much thought, we seized the opportunity to sneak in.
