Smorgasburg: Take My Money Please
Oh, ho ho how you so clever. Smörgåsbord + Williamsburg, what excellent wordsmithing. Smorgasburg is a collection of local food vendors in Brooklyn. For the full list of vendors click here. I often frequent the Brooklyn Flea on Clinton Hill, and believe me when I say there are some very excellent food vendors there.
I showed up at noon, and the place was already pretty packed. I would have taken a fancy panorama for you guys, but I felt too awkward standing at one spot taking pictures. Instead I took a quick shot and proceeded to follow my nose...wherever it goes...
The location is really awesome, and probably one of my favorite spots in NY. I often visit at night to enjoy the lit-up skyline of Manhattan, and the view of Williamsburg bridge.
First we hit up Bite Size Kitchen. They served those oh, so familiar Mantou tacos with different fillings. The left is the braised pork belly, and the right is the duck. The duck seemed okay. The meat was minced as opposed to an entire piece of duck. I personally feel that when serving food in this fashion, the flavor of the meat needs to be very bold, and in large pieces. The duck seemed to be lacking in texture; it didn't have the bite I expected. The braised pork belly had a nice consistency, but I feel like BaoHaus does it so much better. The pork seemed a bit overcooked and didn't have a bold enough flavor.
Next stop was Porchetta. I really really like the flavor of these sandwiches. They use roasted pork with crispy skin, highly seasoned with herbs and spices (though to be honest I only taste the salt). They serve it on a crusty ciabatta roll. The thickness of the bread really balances well with the flavor of the pork. My only fault with this place is that the sandwich is not much bigger than the Bite Sized Kitchen's tacos and it runs about 6 bucks.
If I had another opportunity to buy a sandwich, I'd still do it just because of how tasty it was. It should be noted that the image below is only half of the sandwich.
